Back up and running!
Written by Roadkill
Saturday, 03 February 2007

Talk about a bad morning.  On Wednesday, Jan 31st I went into the office only to find out that my server had blown it's main harddrive.  (not to mention my right foot was still hurting and slipping and falling hard on the ice)

Since this server was built on a budget, I didn't have a mirror or a raid5 protecting the system, just two harddrives.  The "system" drive, and the "data" drive.  The system drive died horribly.

Thankfully because of my configuration almost all of my data was intact, though I did lose a lot of the server tweaks I had done.  I was even able to save all of the mysql databases!

Obviously the server is back up and running, and now sports a nice shiny new mirror so hopefully a drive failure in the future won't be near as catastrophic.

It appears the downtime was almost 3 days..  erf...

But it's back, and things should be snazzier than ever!

Please help save Palladium Books!!
Written by Roadkill
Saturday, 16 September 2006

Okay I know I'm behind on pretty much everything I just found out about this last weekend: Palladium Books® is in trouble!  I want to do anything within my abilities to help this company that has brought us so many great games.  Rifts®, NightbaneTM, Heroes UnlimitedTM, just to mention a few..

I've spent years enjoying the games produced by Palladium®, I cannot imagine them not being around.  I know nothing I write here will do justice to how I feel about this topic, I'm just hoping that others will help as much as possible.  (And I know there are tons who are!)

I must mention one thing at this point, gamers we have to make it known to our local gaming stores that we want the products from Palladium Books®.  I learned about this entire issue when I stopped in to one of the local gaming stores here, and noticed that their selection of books from Palladium was pretty small.  I was looking for some of the newer Phase WorldTM, books, and when I asked when they would be restocking their Palladium® section, I was told they were not planning to until they knew how the current problems would be resolved.  (That's how I found out about this, and yes, I'm a more than a few months behind..  Life is busy)  I was floored by this at first.. First I was stunned that Palladium® was apparently in some sort of trouble that could cause it to go out of business, and second that the store had such a calloused point of view of the subject.

I bought my book, resolved to find out what was going on, and if there was anything at all I could do to help.  While the "real world" part of me tries to understand the underlying business sense of the store's position, the idealist in me wants to rant and rave and scream and kick.

So now it comes to how can we, the gamers, help?  Here is a start:

  • Read the release on what is happening.
  • Tell your local gaming stores that you want more products from Palladium Books® and Purchase them!
  • Purchase a Megaverse® United Print here
  • Enter the drawing to get your name used as an upcomming character in one of the books!
  • They have a donations link on the main page of www.palladiumbooks.com Give if you can!
  • Visit www.palladiumbooks.com and see what's new.
  • If your local gaming store won't carry the books you want, buy them from Palladium Books® online store.
  • Inform your gaming group, friends, coworkers, anyone who will listen, and see if they can help!
  • Stay Positive and let those at Palladium® know their efforts are appreciated!

I truly wish there was more I could do to help, I am a big fan of not just the games that Palladium has produced, but of the company itself.  All the great artists, writers, editors, heck even the accountants!  Everything they have done over the years.. So many times I've been amazed at the quality of the books especially in relation to the price of them.  Kevin Siembieda and Crew have all strived to keep costs down while still providing great products.  I cannot put into words exactly what that type of dedication to the fans means to me, one of the long time fans.

So.. A big Thank You to Kevin and everyone at Palladium Books®!

Keep up the great work!
